Pulp and paper and building products firm Georgia-Pacific is moving forward on plans for a new $285 million gypsum wallboard production plant near Sweetwater, TX, the company announced in a recent release.

Located next to its existing gypsum plant on Highway 1856, the new facility will implement state-of-the-art production processes, the company said. Together, the two plants will produce over 1 billion sq ft/yr of gypsum products.

“The demand for our diverse gypsum products continues to be strong, especially in Texas,” Georgia-Pacific Gypsum President Brent Paugh said in a statement. “By having two production lines in Nolan County, Georgia-Pacific can strengthen its capacity to meet our growing customer needs in Texas’ residential, commercial and industrial construction.”

As part of the project, Georgia-Pacific will shutter its Quanah, TX plant. The Sweetwater site is slated to commence operations in late 2022. 120 full-time jobs will be created as a result of the facility’s opening.

“In Sweetwater, we will be able to keep logistical costs low, and we will have access to more trucks to deliver our products,” Paugh said. “This, along with the company’s current gypsum facility near Sweetwater, a talented workforce and local natural resources, makes Nolan County an ideal site to expand our operations.”
