The “Shiny Metal” house by award-winning Colorado architect Harry Teague is not for everyone, but for those into postmodernism, it is sure to entice. Built in 1984 for an artist couple, the striking two-story structure features a metal-clad facade on the upper level punctuated by small square windows framed in turquoise. The facade of the lower level is painted purple, and a strip of translucent windows runs horizontally between the floors.

The shape of the home is actually quite simple. In essence, it is a flat rectangular volume characterized by a central, glazed triangle gable that forms a vaulted ceiling in the living room. A kitchen with a glass display case reflecting the shape of the house and pink-and-red-painted cabinets is located here, with its multi-colored linoleum flooring also repeating on the staircase. Private quarters flank this area.

The lower level originally comprised two painting studios and a storage space. They were converted into expansive guest bedrooms and a small (also colorful) kitchen during a 1992 renovation. A glass garage door opens up the dining space to a semicircular covered patio and the incredible 11-acre valley in which the house sits.

Other amenities include a guest house, gorgeous gardens, a tennis court, and a little spa with turquoise covering that match the main house’s window frames. Located at 525 Cactus Flats Road in Carbondale, Colorado, the property is offered at $1.4 million after a recent price cut of $150,000. There is an option to purchase two adjacent lots for $150,000 each. Have a look.
