Wild camping at the extreme

Are you a daredevil that likes to live life on the edge? What about sleeping and spending the night on the edge... of a cliff?

In Pembrokeshire, there is a pretty daring outdoor accommodation experience that sees campers sleeping on a portaledge that dangles suspended from the cliffs above the crashing waves below.

Adventure company Rise and Summit offers people who want to add a bit of excitement into their camping holiday the chance of a truly unforgettable night. Embrace the open skies, spot shooting stars, watch the moonlight dance on the water and fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping below. Sound like heaven?

This experience runs all year round and the recommended group size is two people - an ideal number for a safe and magical experience. You will spend the night on a 'portaledge’ - a hanging tent generally used by climbers when they’re spending multiple days on a big wall climb.

The experience will see campers abseiling their way down the cliff to the ledge to enjoy a three-course dinner before settling down on their hovering bed for the night to get those imperative 40 winks. You don't have to be an avid climber or have experience climbing to get involved, just a 'can-do' attitude, sense of adventure and some level of fitness.

Before reaching the portaledge, you will be shown the ropes - quite literally - and basic skills. During your stay, you won't be left entirely to your own devices as your instructor will be nearby should you need anything.

While the experience sounds and looks breathtaking, climbing - and dining and sleeping - on a cliff's edge, may have you weak at the knees and questioning how safe it is.

The company's website states: "Cliff camping – when it’s done properly, as we do it – is completely safe. We use the best gear, and you will be attached to a security rope at all times. While it’s not perhaps for the fainthearted, we find that just about everyone can rise to the challenge. We do everything necessary to put your mind at ease, and give you an experience of a lifetime."

But what about the question that must be on everyone's lips... what if you need a toilet? There is the opportunity to go before you abseil to the portaledge in the portable compost toilet near the top of the cliff.

With any Welsh staycation, rain and wind is always a possibility so waterproof covers are provided if the weather turns.

The company recommends you kit up with the following:

For the overnight cliff camping experience including dinner, it will cost £250 per person. There are three other locations across the UK where Rise and Summit run this camping experience - North Devon, Swanage and Dorset.
